HFPV MASK

Worked with William Beaumont Hospital Department of Radiation Oncology to develop a high frequency percussive ventilation “HFPV” system. HFPV is a pneumatic system that delivers high frequency bursts of air (100-400 bursts/min) to stabalize a patients lungs during an MRI session for improved imaging quality.

The design needed to be highly stable on a patients face, have an effective seal around the mouth for air delivery and offer a patient controlled diverter valve for discontinuing the pressure if a patient felt uncomfortable.

The final design combined a number of off the shelf devices from the CPAP and medical fields to meet the design objectives. A custom designed central adapter allowed for both the connection of these different devices as well as a depth adjustment feature to ensure optimal fit and seal.

The final kits for an IRB approved pilot study included 3D printed parts out of FDA approved materials that could be reused after autoclave cleaning.

The finished project resulted in a highly functional device with results published in multiple medical review journals.
